Our History
The Name
The Riverview isn’t Cape Girardeau's first hotel with the same name. Originally located at the corner of Broadway and Water Street, with a beautiful view of the Mississippi River, the original Riverview Hotel unfortunately burned in 1916. With a rich history to offer the Cape Girardeau community, Century Casinos decided to bring The Riverview name back to life, with a respectful nod to its namesake one mile down the river.
The Past
The Riverview is located where a booming five-story shoe factory once stood. Built in 1907 for the Roberts, Johnson and Rand Shoe Co., taken over by International Shoe Co. and eventually Florsheim Shoe Co., there were once 1,600 people working at this site. The building was abandoned in 1984 and demolished in 1990 and was once declared as the largest dress shoe manufacturing plant in the world.
The Future
In 2010, the property along with additional adjoining property was purchased, to establish what is now Century Casino Cape Girardeau and The Riverview Hotel. Countless wonderful memories were made both at the original Riverview Hotel and shoe factory – a hotel welcoming visitors to Cape Girardeau and a community living and working together. We hope The Riverview, in partnership with Century Casino Cape Girardeau, brings memories for the next generation of visitors and residents.
